Cataract and macular degeneration are the eye disorders that generally develop due to ageing. In cataract the transparent eye lens yellows, hindering the passage of light rays through it making the vision hazy, cloudy, or blurry. Recent studies suggest that a diet high in antioxidants may prevent or slow down the disorder.

Zeaxanthin could be obtained from greens, red peppers, and corn. Taking diet high in saturated fats increases the risk of age related macular degeneration. Eating fish once in a week may reduce the risk.
This disorder is found in diabetics. It is the infiltration of the retina with tiny ruptured blood vessels. Taking antioxidants, nutritious food and maintaining blood glucose level reduces the risk of diabetic retinopathy.
This deficiency disease caused by the deficiency of vitamin A is rare in western world but it still exists in many underdeveloped countries due to poor diet and less knowledge about the disease. In this disease the patient faces difficulty in seeing well in dim or insufficient light. The impaired ability of eyes to adapt to darkness leads to night blindness or poor night vision.
The causes may be vitamin A deficiency or inability to utilize it properly.
Beta-carotene which gets converted into vitamin A in body can be helpful. Sources of beta-carotene are dark yellow or orange fruits and vegetables such as carrots, sweet potatoes, apricots, papaya, and dark green leafy vegetables.

Some studies suggest that the metal may not cause the disease, its increased concentration in the Alzheimer’s brain worsen the condition.
· Some studies found that people 65 and older who had fish once in a week had a 60% lower risk of Alzheimer’s than those who did not eat fish.
· The role of folic acid is being studied by researchers. Leafy green vegetables, orange juice, liver, cooked beans, corn, asparagus, lentil, nuts, peas, enriched breads and cereals are some common sources of folic acid.
· Vitamin B6 and B12 are also found to help lower the risk.
· Vitamin B6sources are meat, fish poultry, whole grains, avocados bananas, potatoes and leafy greens.
· Vitamin B12 is found in lean meat, fish poultry and dairy products. You can say that what is good for your heart is good for the brain also.
· Low levels of DHA (an omega 3 fatty acid) have been linked to age related dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease. Fatty fishes such as salmon, mackerel, halibut and sardines are some sources of omega3fatty acids.
· Eggs, soybean and soy products should be taken to get lecithin and choline.
· Antioxidants may prevent the disease.
· Avoid alcohol
· Avoid taking antacid with aluminum.
· Avoid cooking in aluminum utensils.
In Alzheimer’s disease chemical and structural changes in the brain slowly destroy the ability to create, remember, learn, reason, and relate to others, hence proper care of patient should be taken. Food should be nutritional. The patient may forget to eat or eat only his favorite foods. They may need to be spoon fed if they have difficulty feeding themselves.
